The Inside Scoop
Hey! I’m Lauren Maniscalco, the owner and founder of Coastal Body Virtual Studio.
I want to tell you a little bit about myself and how I came to be a Pilates + Barre instructor (never in a million years would I have thought!) and why I am so passionate about helping each of you reach your fitness goals in the most convenient way I know.
I think you can relate.
I was an extremist. Yo-yo dieting, marathons, and body image issues. It didn’t help that I was trying to make my way as an actress where this type of lifestyle is encouraged.
Exhausted from being a struggling actor, I started doing some deep soul searching (I promise I’m not going to get all woo woo on you), hoping to find this allusive “balance” everyone talks about.
I went back to school and got my degree in Dietetics. Ok, so my days of fad diets were now behind me, but I still couldn’t loosen my grip on the excessive exercising.
After completing a marathon — and all the training that goes into it — I was told to take a month off or stick to low impact exercise after killing my body.
I. Freaked. Out.
All the negative self-talk was now screaming in my head: “I’m going to get fat.” “I’ll be huge.” “You don’t understand, I have to exercise in order to relax.” “I don’t need time off. That marathon wasn’t THAT bad!” “Now I’ll have to diet again since I’m not burning calories!”
Any of this sound familiar?
That “balance” I thought I had gotten? Well, let’s just say I still had a ways to go.
After a little pep talk with myself, yet again in search of “balance,” I decided to try Pilates. I figured if it’s good enough for Madonna, then I guess I could give it a whirl.
I strolled into Urban Body Studios for Pilates in Atlanta totally full of myself. I was quickly humbled — these movements were foreign, yet oddly familiar. It was as if this was how I was supposed to move and to think about moving. This didn’t mean the class was easy by any stretch (no pun intended). Trust me, I had no idea what I was doing or why. But I was impressed by the subtle difficulty. I couldn’t explain it to anyone, but something inside me said to keep trying. I decided to roll with it and buy a package of group classes.
By month’s end, my body had completely transformed. With zero running!
I wasn’t killing it on the treadmill, face beat red, hyperventilating. I felt great. I slept better. My skin glowed. I LOST WEIGHT!
And, here’s the kicker, I was having fun! Exercise always seemed like another to-do on my long list of obligations. Now, I wanted to go to Pilates. I craved it. I couldn’t wait to get to the studio.
What was going on? How was this working?
Needless to say, I bought another package of classes.
I soon enrolled in Urban Body’s teacher training program directed by Penelope Wyer Barrow (who was trained by Joseph Pilates’ protégé Romana Kryzanowska) and received my certification with Classical Pilates. At the same time, I also received my certification in Sports Nutrition through the International Sports Sciences Association so I could help clients attack their health goals, bringing them the best in exercise and nutrition.
By May 2011, I had found “balance.”
I was jazzed to wake up every morning. I guess you could say I found my calling. I felt like I was doing what I was supposed to do. I opened Coastal Body Studio in Charleston, SC, offering Pilates and Barre to all the Southern belles and gents.
I got so busy preaching Pilates that I struggled to find the time to work out myself. I couldn’t make it to any studios’ classes — their classes were at the same time as my studio’s. I was having to work out at weird times and in weird places (like at 10:00 pm on the living room floor while my hubby channel surfed).
I missed my classes with my favorite teachers who were always pushing me to the next level. Working out on my own, it was way too easy for me to do only those exercises I like and am good at, not necessarily the ones I needed.
I quickly realized I wasn’t the only one struggling to find time to work out. An idea popped in my head! I gathered some of my favorite fitness friends and my iPhone, and we started shooting workout videos to share with each other.
Which brings us to what we’ve evolved to today.
Our classes are taught by some of the industry’s finest. We offer clear, concise instruction with plenty of modifications — whether you want to slow it down or amp it up — and all of our classes are clearly labeled for your fitness level.
Sure, there are other online workout subscriptions, but here’s the biggest difference with Coastal Body: We make ourselves personally available to you. If you have a quick question — something doesn’t feel right or you’re unsure of a movement — email me directly!
If you’re the type who fast forwards through the parts of the workout video you don’t like, we offer virtual personal training. That’s right! Thanks to the wonders of Skype, Facetime, Google Hangouts, and the like, we come straight to you for a little one-on-one encouragement.
My wish is for you to enjoy exercise and all it does to improve your quality (and quantity) of life. As conveniently as possible.
